Heartburn Glossary, Acid Reflux

Anyway, I found this article really interesting. I have had reflux and heartburn issues ever since my health crashed about 2.5 years ago. It drives me nuts.

High levels of gastrin cause overproduction of stomach acid. This increase in acidity can lead to the development of peptic ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

– HCL can only do so much, a white tongue and other symptoms are likely related to the root causes of why the stomach acid is low to begin with. More testing is where you need to head after you’ve figured out how to create good digestion.

Antacids are useful because they relieve heartburn rapidly, especially if it is caused by foods or certain activity. But relief is only temporary. Over-the-counter antacids do not prevent heartburn from returning or allow an injured esophagus to heal. If a person needs antacids for more than 2 weeks, talk with a health care professional to get a better diagnosis of the condition and appropriate treatment. The health care professional will recommend treating heartburn in a stepwise fashion.

Stay away from carbonated beverages. They cause belching, which promotes reflux of stomach acid. While the stomach is contracting, the valve between the esophagus and the stomach needs to remain tightly closed otherwise the acid can splash backwards and cause the symptoms of burning, belching and bitter taste we associated with heartburn or GERD.

Depending on your illness, you may only need to take it for a few weeks or months. Sometimes you might need to take it for longer, even many years. Some people don’t need to take lansoprazole every day and take it only when they have symptoms.

But, excess stomach acid can cause uncomfortable symptoms, pain, and even severe health problems. The most common symptom is heartburn (a.k.a. gastroesophageal reflux), which occurs when stomach acid leaks into the esophagus.

When should I call my healthcare provider?

These tumors, called gastrinomas, secrete large amounts of the hormone gastrin, which causes your stomach to produce too much acid. The excess acid then leads to peptic ulcers, as well as to diarrhea and other symptoms.

Hi, Matthew. This is probably a question that you should ask your doctor because he or she can tell you exactly why your stomach is burning (if you don’t already know). The doctor will be able to advise you about the best diet for your specific health disorder. I have gastric problem from last 1 year.

Our preferred, most effective way to increase stomach acid naturally is to use digestive bitters. Bitters, made from bitter herbs, naturally enhance the body’s secretion of HCl. Take 1/4 teaspoon before meals.

Lately I notice I only cough after eating, or if I recline. My doc says its acid reflux. I do not burp or pass gas much and recently i had a crohns flate which maybe was brought on by the antibiotics. As part of trying to treat the cough I’ve taken Prilosec but it did nothing.

Please don’t eat fruit after a meal. Do it 30 minutes before or 2 hours after as this could be your problem. Protein takes longer to digest and mixing fruit will ferment onto of meat.
