Do You Have Enough Stomach Acid or HCL?

Hi Steve, this is my second go-round with HCL. I have a long history of IBS and GERD and now gluten intolerance. A few months ago, I had some kind of stomach ailment that put me in the hospital for 4 days on IV only. Nothing was found with three CT scans, an ultrasound and blood tests.

I never feel hungry. I miss hunger pain I used to get as teenager. Since my stomach lining is virtually non existent, I assume I don’t have natural acid nor intrinsic factor. It amazes me doctors still prescribe acid suppressing meds without determining the acid levels. I understand acid level declines as you get old.

Treatment involves medications or, in severe cases, surgery. Your doctor or midwife will first advise you to try to ease your symptoms by eating smaller meals more often, and not eating fatty and spicy foods. They may also suggest raising the head of your bed by 10 to 20cm, so your head and chest are higher than your waist. This will help stop stomach acid travelling up towards your throat.

Treatment Options for GERD

Follow the dosage and timing instructions carefully for each different drug to prevent potentially severe side effects. Alginic acid – Prepared from kelp (seaweed), alginate acts as a physical acid barrier for the esophagus in gastroesophageal reflux.

Gastric acid production is regulated by both the autonomic nervous system and several hormones. The parasympathetic nervous system, via the vagus nerve, and the hormone gastrin stimulate the parietal cell to produce gastric acid, both directly acting on parietal cells and indirectly, through the stimulation of the secretion of the hormone histamine from enterochromaffine-like cells (ECL).

In fact, drugs such as Nexium, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prilosec, Zantac and others, can actually cause more damage than good over a period of extended use. If you experience regular heartburn or other gastrointestinal issues, there’s an excellent chance that your body does not create enough stomach acid which creates low stomach acid symptoms, according to Dr. Jonathon V. Wright.

  • Digestion begins at your mouth.
  • Post gallbladder surgery can cause bile reflux .
  • Many digestive problems are caused by too little stomach acid.

When we carefully test people over age forty who’re having heartburn, indigestion and gas, over 90 percent of the time we find inadequate acid production by the stomach. What happens in the stomach is when food arrives, if the body does not have the correct levels of HCL or enzymes it panics and throws the little acid it does have to the top of the stomach which causes heartburn. Taking an acid suppressant only makes this situation worse. But here’s the problem. Numerous studies show that the incidence of heartburn increases with age, while stomach acid levels generally decline with age.

It is a good idea to avoid eating for at least 3 hours before bedtime. This allows the body to fully digest before sleeping, and it can reduce the risk of nighttime heartburn. If the pH value is greater than 5, this suggests an almost complete absence of stomach acid, which is termed achlorhydria. Doctors measure acidity using the pH scale.

1. Chew your food

In the final article, I’ll present simple dietary and lifestyle changes that can eliminate heartburn and GERD once and for all. @Terri – What your reporting is exactly what I would expect anyone with low stomach acid to tell me. When they eat more meat (protein) they have more digestion problems.

Well i took the teaspoon of lemon juice and everything was great. I had h.pyroli treatment 20 years ago but the damage to stomach lining had been too far gone and diagnosed with strophic gastritis and since then the intestinal cells have replaced most of my stomach lining. It is called intestinal metaplasia – precancerous cells according to my specialist. I take HCL when I feel that unpleasant pulling or empty sensation in the stomach area.
