Recognizing Acid Reflux/GERD in Infants
It’s important to speak with your baby’s doctor or pediatrician if you think your infant has GERD. Infants may arch their body during or after feeding. It’s thought that this may be due to a painful burning sensation caused by the buildup of stomach fluid in the esophagus. Your infant may refuse to eat if they experience pain during feeding.
Thicken breast milk or formula
That’s where to start. Fortunately, babies and young kids in general tend to respond really well to dietary interventions and probiotics and prebiotics.
Older babies may benefit from having specific tests to pinpoint the issues that underlie digestive symptoms. A comprehensive stool test that examines digestive-enzyme production, inflammatory markers, intestinal bacteria, and yeast cultures can be informative and lead to appropriate treatment.
Certainly some parents are just frustrated by a seeming lack of options with conventional medicine. They may be uncomfortable with giving medications to such a young child. They may just be tired, stressed and online, a combination that probably is to blame for the majority of bad medical decisions. But the children of most parents who seek out natural cures for apparent reflux are also cared for by pediatricians and family doctors. These caregivers are simply seeking out additional help and have been fooled by the pretty wrapping paper on the empty box that is alternative medicine.
Barium swallow or upper GI test. The baby is given barium to drink, which coats the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of small intestine.
Information expires December 2019. A sour taste in the mouth, an acid or burning sensation in the stomach, sour vomiting, regurgitated bits of food, and a yellow coating on the tongue are all indications for this remedy. The person may have problems after consuming dairy products or too much sugar. Another indication for Natrum phos is a craving for fried eggs. This remedy may be indicated if a person feels anxious, restless yet exhausted, and is worse from the smell and sight of food.
Alcohol doesn’t interfere with the way Gaviscon works. But drinking alcohol makes your stomach produce more acid than normal.
That’s not surprising when you know that stomach acid is required to absorb those nutrients in the first place. These include things like vitamin C, iron, magnesium, B12, folate, and other B vitamins. These nutrients are important for adults, but they’re even more important for developing babies. So folate and B12 in particular are needed to form new red blood cells, and they play an important role in methylation, which silences and activates gene expression, which, in turn, regulates just about anything in the body. Vitamin C is important for collagen development and the structural development of the body, in addition to immune function.
This is the system that we’ve created, and it’s completely broken. This is why there’s such a desperate need for functional medicine and new practitioners that are practicing this style of medicine, and also, current practitioners in the conventional system that are starting to integrate some of these principles into their practice.
