ABC of the upper gastrointestinal tract: Indigestion: When is it functional?

Many of the symptoms of indigestion can be explained on the basis of reduced activity of the gastrointestinal muscles that results in slowed transport (transit) of food through the stomach and intestine. (It is clear, as discussed previously, that there are other causes of these symptoms in addition to slowed transit.) Such symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal bloating. When transit is severely affected, abdominal distention (swelling) also may occur and can result in abdominal pain.

The pain from costochondritis usually affects the left side of the chest, but it can sometimes affect both sides. Deep breathing, coughing, and physical activity may make the pain worse. A common symptom of pneumonia is chest pain that typically worsens when a person inhales deeply or coughs. The chest pain can range from mild to severe. People who are unsure whether they are experiencing angina or a heart attack should call 911 immediately or go to the emergency room.

It didn’t make the pain any worse but it was …it was really really bad pain. A variety of factors can cause a child or teenager to feel chest pain. In most cases, chest pain in children and teenagers is not caused by a heart problem. Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a general term for digestion-related pain or discomfort in the abdomen. Symptoms of indigestion include heartburn, excess gas, bloating, burping, and feeling too full after a normal meal.

Both anxiety and panic attack can cause symptoms very similar to angina. These attacks-which can occur out of the blue or in response to a stressful event-include chest pain along with shortness of breath, palpitations, and dizziness. The key difference is that the chest pain is usually fleeting, lasting only a moment or two. Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium, a protective, double-layered sac surrounding the heart.

I thought I had cracked or broken a rib, so I went to my doctor. After 2 more weeks of guesswork, 2 CT scans covering my entire torso, blood and urine tests, and 2 trips to the emergency room, the doctors said that, by process of elimination, they were going to treat me for pleurisy. I have just started treatment, so I guess I will know in a few days if the diagnosis is correct or not. Very painful and very frustrating for the past month.

  • Many symptoms are tolerable if patients’ anxieties about the seriousness of their symptoms can be relieved.
  • I will find out more I hope on August 24th.
  • Symptoms of indigestion can include feeling sick, pain at the top of the abdomen (dyspepsia) or behind the breastbone (heartburn) and lots of burping.
  • I was thinking it was my heart but everyone’s comments are me to a T.
  • You may be able to manage your indigestion yourself by making changes to your lifestyle and taking over-the-counter medicines from a pharmacy.
  • Acid reflux can be a painful problem to deal with that can result in long-term issues if not taken care of.

While waiting for that test, friends of mine told me that I had symptoms of a hiatal hernia. I researched it and found out that chiropractors are knowledgeable about hiatal hernias and can do a stomach manipulation to slip it back in place.

This is called acid reflux. Indigestion affects around four in every 10 people in the UK every year. It’s a vague term that refers to different symptoms in different people. You may notice pain in your upper tummy with bloating and sickness. Or you may notice a burning pain at the top of your chest, behind your ribs.

One of the challenges is that the symptoms, initially, can be very vague and patients often do not present with classical symptoms until they develop jaundice. Now, by far the commonest presenting symptom is jaundice.

If you think your chest pain is heart-related, seek emergency care. Your individual treatment will depend on what your doctor determines is the cause. Chest pain that accompanies frequent heartburn can be treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
