9 Reasons Your SIBO Isn’t Cleaning

IBS-C and IBS-D are “generic diagnoses” while SIBO is a very specific condition. The paper lists underlying causes of SIBO and shows plots showing normal and abnormal breath test results. I read the paper before I talked to Mark, and it’s only then (in talking to him) that you get added insights like “SIBO can be completely cured with just a prokinetic; the drugs just make it go faster”. I’ve done the IBS-smart test (described elsewhere in this article) and that was negative. It turns out that problems in the small intestine have fewer treatment options.

The normal (beneficial) bacteria that are an essential part of the healthy small bowel also perform important functions. The small bowel plays an important role in digesting food and absorbing nutrients.

Be a aware eater

While bacteria are necessary for proper digestion, most of our intestinal bacteria are found in the colon. The small intestine is a narrow, twisting tube connecting the stomach with the large intestine or colon. Have you tried every diet and all medications for IBS (iritable bowel syndrome) with minimal or no success? Nutritional Protocol for the Treatment of Intestinal Permeability Defects and Related Conditions Comment: The presentation by Traub and Weinstock outlined theoretical and established connections between the gut and skin health and submitted a convincing hypothesis about the clinical relevance of these connections in the context of numerous high-morbidity dermatologic conditions.

Support healthy forms of probiotics using strains which help balance histamine locally in the gut. While bile flow is being worked on, one may consider using Ox Bile to help kill infections locally in the small intestine. As you can see, bacteria increase production of histamine by stimulating the HDC gene.

One prong of the treatment plan that’s not discussed as often is optimism. As I waited for the results, which came 3 weeks after I finished my course of herbal antibiotics (the Biotics protocol discussed below), I planned for the worst and continued to diligently research other treatment options, debate which route I would try for the next round, and question whether I would ever end up desperate enough to get my meals in the form of a medical liquid (i.e. If you’re wondering how to read them or how it works, make sure to brush up on SIBO 101 in this post. I’ve included a screenshot below of my two tests side by side in case you’re curious. The first being that treatment options are complicated, varied, and often take doctors a few tries to tailor to the individual.

Your best bet is to start making serious dietary changes, avoiding problematic foods, replenishing your gut bacteria using a pro-biotic supplement, and restoring your digestive functions. No matter how much healthy food you eat, poor nutrient absorption can lead to health issues and if you already have an unhealthy diet, a compromised small intestine will make things even more difficult. If you have SIBO, however, due to the overwhelming amount of bacteria, your body will have a difficult time absorbing all the nutrients. While it is normal for bacteria to be present in your digestive tract, in SIBO patients, the level of bacteria has increased to irregular numbers.

  • Therefore, it would follow that probiotics that increase the level of “good” bacteria, or promote a healthier mix of bacteria, would be helpful in treating or managing SIBO.
  • So if you starve the bacteria, the stuff that grows back will be all replicas of the bacteria that is immune to starvation.
  • We will focus on you, taking the time to understand your health concerns and anything that appears to affect your symptoms.
  • We have to look for the triggers for the autoimmune condition, whether they are stress, environmental toxins, food sensitivities, etc.

Best SIBO treatment methods (and worst)

I’ve written about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in my last three posts. When bacteria migrate back to the small intestine or reproduce there for other reasons, it can lead to digestive stress, poor absorption of nutrients, and even to the leaky intestinal syndrome. Research now suggests that SIBO (also known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) may account for as much as 78% of IBS cases.

Diagnosing plus treating SIBO

Without the spiritual healing you cannot truly be free from gut inflammation. As I started to heal and slow down, I became aware of how my unhealed trauma had been the root cause of some serious physical conditions, such as chronic stress, severe TMJ, adrenal fatigue and, worst of all, gut inflammation. It explained my drug addiction, my food addiction, my stress, my anxiety, and why I so desperately needed to control every corner of my life.

If you need to cut short the time, do it on the backend, e..g, fast for 8 hours after taking the pill. I had absolutely none of the “up all night, bathroom every 10 minutes” horror experiences reported by others because I took the recommended dose: .5mg (i.e., 1/4 of the 2mg pill) on an empty stomach. The first time I took it (.5mg), I had no side effects whatsoever, just a clearly “looser” stool the morning instead of hard pack!
