Symptoms of the condition are heartburn, acid reflux, chest pain – and in severe cases – swallowing difficulties. Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GORD) is when stomach acid rises up into the oesophagus (gullet), which can cause heartburn and indigestion. Standard treatment can involve removing dietary triggers (such as fatty foods) and medication with acid-blocking tablets called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs can however have mild side effects such as headaches, diarrhoea or constipation, feeling sick, tummy pain and dizziness. Acid reflux, also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), is a condition where stomach acid leaks back up into the gullet, causing pain. Standard treatment for GORD is a type of medication known as a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), which reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

This prevents the food from returning into the food pipe. Research also suggests that foods high in fiber, particularly soluble fiber, can help reduce the symptoms of GERD. Until recently, researchers did not fully understand GERD, and there was a lack of scientific evidence to suggest that changing the diet could improve symptoms. The results indicated that people who consumed more cholesterol and saturated fatty acids and a higher percentage of calories from fat were more likely to experience GERD symptoms.

Apparently I’m not alone, with around 20 to 30 percent of the U.S. population recorded as having GERD issues, often on a daily basis. So what’s going on?

Fundoplication is usually done with a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedure. The wrapping of the top part of the stomach can be partial or complete. Medication to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. Baclofen may ease GERD by decreasing the frequency of relaxations of the lower esophageal sphincter. Side effects might include fatigue or nausea.

You might try a lower-acidity coffee first, then proceed to other types of coffee if you don’t have any symptoms. There will always be some people with reflux symptoms who need drug treatment, such as those with stomach irritation or ulcers. We do not know exactly what people in each group were eating and we cannot tell what it was about the plant-based Mediterranean diet or alkaline water that might have provided a benefit.

No diet has been proven to prevent GERD. However, certain foods may ease symptoms in some people.
